日本語でも「１２」で、発音は・・外人さんに申し上げておきますが・・[ju-ni=ジュウニ]。[ichi-ni=イチニ]とは読まない方が無難ですよ。It means “ten plus two” in Japanese. Funny, isn’t it? But, watch your pronunciation. Don’t say [ichi-ni] because it means “one and two.” Try to sound it like [ju-ni], which will become twelve. This is what you want to say.

ボクは、[ワンツー]と中学校の１年の時は読みましたが。クラスの全員が笑った。でも、先生は笑わなかったのである。そう読めないこともないと分かっていたのだと思う。アンタはどうや？[ワンツー]なのか、[ツェルヴ]なのか？これは生か死かと問うほどの人類の大問題なのである。・・しかしね、[ワンツー]だと、1, 2と間にコンマを入れないとダメらしい。心が狭いね！でも、そうしないとNASAはおこる。

まあ、ダジャレはこのぐらいにして語源。古い。あのヴァイキングがイギリス島に武力侵入した７８９年に生まれた言葉。・・ええ？それまで１０を超す言葉はなかったのかですって？そんなこと私が知るわけないでしょうが！神様に聞いてくださいよ。空海でも分からないことは私にも分からない。

でもね、勉強すると、少し分かった。古期フリースランド語、twelfから来たものと分かった。これは、北西部オランダので話される西ゲルマン語言語らしい。ヴァイキング族が、現在の数学の数字の基礎の、12 進法(duodesimal system＊)を開発して、侵略国に伝えたと言う。これは更に古いラテン語の、「2 と 10」の意味から来た。だから、外人さんに、 “ten plus=and two”はラテン語的のも科学的であったのだ・・いや、偶然ですがね。

注：(*)十二進法（じゅうにしんほう）とは、12 を底（てい=base）とし、底およびその冪(addition)を基準にして数を表す方法である。

　いや、待ってくださいよ。では、英語の先生がボクが、[ワンツー]と呼んだことに笑わなかったことは、ひょっとすると彼女は、語源を知っていたからではないか？！いや、そうに違いない。これは、今からでは遅いがすごいことだ。その深淵なる知識・・今なら尊敬の極に達するであろう。合掌ものだ。更に、驚くのだが、女の知識の方が深淵であることだ。Woman’s knowledge is deeper! Amazing, isn’t it, though?

　因みに、“duo+”が付く言葉は、この意味が「２」を表すので、後の言葉に被せれば大体の意味が推測できる。更に、この、“twelve”の、由来は、西ゲルマン語の複合語「（10取って）2残る」の意味を言う。betweenなどの由来として、「2点の中間」の意。doubtの由来として、「2つの選択肢の間で迷うこと」から、迷う、疑うと言う意味になった。December, dozenなどもこれから由来。また、現在の裁判制度の１２人の裁判官も、１ダースが、one dozenと１０と言う割切れの良い数を使わない思考方法がこの「１２進法」が根本にある。平均の男の足の長さが、１foot(12 inches)であることも、この１２進法から来たものだと言う。全て１２が基礎になっている。１２は、西洋思考と志向の「平均」なのである。

比べて、日本では１尺である。これは、30.3 cm。１２ inchesは、約２８ｃｍであるからかなり近い。どうもこの辺の長さの感覚が人類の尺度のベースになっているようだ。これを１０進法に変えたのはフランス人。お蔭で計算が飛躍的に楽になった。実は、現在はアメリカもついに１０進法に変わったが、ボクが留学した当時は全て、インチ、ヤードで実に困った。１yardは、0.9144 メートル=36 インチ=3 フィートなのであった。これを、計算尺か、鉛筆と紙で素早く計算すると言う離れ業を現地学生はやっていた・・が、ボクはいつもモタモタした。時間が猛烈に掛かった。もう、試験の時は死にたいと思った。ソロバンで掛け算と割り算の仕方を習っておけばよかったと後悔した。ユラノ助殿！

２０(Twenty)と言う言葉は、「２」と「１０」の組み合わせたものである。“Two” と“ten” の音も組み合わせると、“twenty”になる。発音は、[ツエンティ]。この例文はすぐ下。

例文：The doctor said that she had twenty-twenty vision and a dead 100 I.Q.

その医者は彼女は正常視力ときっちり平均値の100 の知能指数を持っている と言った。

注：米国での視力測定法で、・インチ大の文字を20フィ－ト（約６メ－トル

の距離から読める視力で、20/20 とも書く。I.Q.は、intelligence quotientで、平均値は、100 。私は、帰国してから毎年下がってきているように感じる。

例文：Me: “Please, professor, do not tell me students learn by trial and error. I got to make this cost-accounting class desparately.”

P: “OK, you’re ahead of me, I realize. Why don’t you use a slide ruler?”

Me: “But, frankly, I don’t know how to use a slide ruler.”

P: “OK. Then, let’s try this. I’ll give you more time…only to you. But, we’ve got to set up a separate testing time, OK?”

　　　　　　　　　　注：Can you imagine this? He was a real savier to me. I started learning like a hell how to use a slide ruler. An engineering student, Ralph helped me like a hell. I bought him a cold beer, but It was painfully expensive that time to me!

「まさかの時の友こそ真の友」

This is a proverb of America. And, I run into a few occasions to testify it myself. When you need help in a real sense of term and life, you need help. You’re not living alone on this world. Ralph, Kathy, Nancy, Bill and a few more American people really helped me when I need help. This is why in Japanese, we write “people” as “人”、in which two pillars lean each other supporting. It makes a heck of sense. If you remove one of these bars, it will not stand alone any longer.

Yes, it is a Japanese view of world and life of people. I discovered the same philosophy extisting in America. After all, they are people…as people as we, Japanese are.

And, one more thing. If you try to help other people, you’ll never regret in your life. You’ll feel a true sense of wholeness which means purpose of being here in world. I know it’ll take a while for people to get this kind of feeling and sense, but more you go through the fire and water and get help from other people, you’ll really appreciate it. What do you say?
